Motivation & Physiology

Paul J Meyer said, “Have the dogged determination to follow through to achieve your goal regardless of circumstance or whatever other people might say, think, or do.”

Andrew Carnegie said, “Think of yourself as on the threshold of unparalleled success, a whole, clear, glorious life lies before you. Achieve, achieve!”

Napoleon Hill said, “Desire is the starting point of all achievement. Not a hope, not a wish, but a keen, pulsating desire which transcends everything.”

Arnold Glasgow said, “Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire!”

Another way that we can gain motivation, power to move, excitement and passion is to use our physiology. Use your body as another way to enhance energy and trigger motivation.

Think of a time when a friend was telling you about something they did that was really exciting. Did they slump over, face slack, mumbling about it? No, they were excited, their voice tones were up. Their facial expression was up, their physiology was more erect, they were gesturing more. They were more powerful, much more animated.

When you hold your physiology in certain postures it makes you feel tired. You hold yourself in another posture it energizes you. Many corporations today have their telephone personnel – sales people, receptionists, hotlines, etc. – look at themselves in mirrors while talking on the phone.

The phone person is coached to sit upright, maybe even in chairs that don’t have backs, lean forward a bit, keep a pleasant look on their face, smile often, which prompts them to have more of a pleasant tone of voice. They pace their rate of speech to the person on the other end of the phone, and by speaking in this tempo or slightly faster, better rapport is facilitated.

This ‘up’ body language and voice tone affects the person on the other end. Can’t you tell if a person on the phone you’re talking with is smiling and excited? Normally you can hear it in their voice. So can other people. Behaving this way has a positive effect on the other person.

Relaxed Readiness

A martial arts expert I coached to fine tune mental resources for an upcoming competition was being timed to see how long it took from the beginning of a punch until it connected. He was standing in a timing field, one like they use for pitchers in baseball, to check the speed of his movements.

When he was standing with his arms at his sides in a striking position but totally relaxed, totally limp and lose, it took the longest to strike.

When he had his arms up in a striking position with the muscles rigid and strongly tensed, this time was the second best.

But when he had his arms in a striking position with just a slight bit of tension, he called this “relaxed readiness”, he was able to repeatedly shave 2/1000 of a second off of his strike time. That may not seem like much time to you, yet that fraction of a second frequently made the difference between being hit or being able to block a blow and was an increase in punch impact force. It often gave him the needed edge to successfully penetrate his opponent’s defenses.

This relaxed readiness the martial artist described is the state of resourcefulness.

Lao Tzu, the author of the Tao said, “If you are present, you are alert, fluid, clear, and able to welcome all things.” When your mind and your body are aligned in purpose, when you are focused, when you’re relaxed and open for the coming experience, and you’re in heightened awareness and you’re ready, it goes easier.”

Knowledge alone won’t get you where you want to go. Your ability to stay resourceful and cope with the stress that your mind encounters makes a difference.
