Internal Competition Is Healthy
The majority of people are their own worst critics.
When things don’t go right, humans have a tendency to beat-up on themselves—even if the issue is actually due to the mistakes of another. They spend a huge amount of time comparing themselves to others, and how they ought to be performing.
A healthy sense of competition is a good trait, but if you are overly competitive continuously, the majority of people you’re around will get tired of it. Besides, competition is stressful, and if carried on too long, has the potential to ruin your mental, emotional and physical health.
If you are “Mr. or Ms. Competition”, it might be worth your time to see what you are trying to prove (and to whom.) The upside of competition is competing within yourself, to better your best.
Strive For Your Personal Best
Beginning today make at least one of your goals be to exceed your personal best. Winning a competition against another person is gratifying, energizing and fun. Allow yourself to rest and revitalize in that attainment satisfaction when it occurs. But remember what Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal.”
Success from competing against another is fleeting because you are repeatedly starting over again, in order to have success in a competition with them. Fun—but short-term.
Being in competition with yourself on the other hand, gives you an opportunity to feel triumph moment to moment. If you are learning, and honing skills, you are winning. The ongoing game is you doing your best, and noticing how you grow and improve.
You can achieve great things. You just have to go for it
