Your Hearts Desire

When I was in my 20’s I was making decisions about my life and about what I wanted to do. About whether I wanted to go back to school or keep working. And I was just struggling.

One day I met a guy who was a graduate student in psychology. We met at a coffee shop actually and just started talking. I was discussing my dilemma about what I was trying to figure out. He used a metaphor which I would like you to think about right now.

With his hands, made a gesture—a box, that would be about 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches square.

He said, “I have this magic box in front of me. And in this magic box is whatever you desire. It’s your heart’s desire in here. The kind of love you want to have. The kind of person you want to be with. The amount of wealth and money you want to have. The health and vitality you desire. Sports skills you want. Whatever you want, it’s all in this magic box.

No one can give you this box. No one can take it away.”

He said this is my magic box and I could reach in there and have whatever I desired.

But he asked, “In order to have what’s in the box – what are you willing to give up?” It goes back to the story of Mr. Jennings. What are you willing to do, or what are you willing to build?

He continued, “You see, in order to have what’s in this box what you have to give up is your fear. You have to give up your guilt; you have to give up your unworthiness. You have to give up not loving. You have to give up holding back from being all that you can be, to help the majority of people that you can help. “

“Are you willing to give up those things; your fear, your guilt, your anxieties? Are you willing to let those go? And what are you willing to do? Are you willing to study? Are you willing to experiment and try new things?”

“Are you willing to go out there and find yourself a mentor, or find a program like this one that can help you grow who you are so that you can have whatever you desire. Are you willing to go out and do that?”

When he asked me those questions it was a turning point in my life. Because I began to think about those things I really did not want to have in my life anymore—and I would gladly give them up. I began to think about those things I really wanted—what I wanted to do, and wanted to have. So that I could be more. So that I could give more.

What’s Your Hearts Desire?

And so you need to think about that. Write that question down. “What am I willing to give up to have the relationship, the money, the time, the freedom, the reputation, the prestige.” – whatever it is. What am I willing to give up to do that?

And, “What am I willing to do, or what am I willing to build and work on.” Keep these questions in front of you and keep reflecting on them. They will assist you in clarifying your vision, and build your passion.

Keep After It

For greater success the core components are:

First, creating a vision and a plan, a compelling vision.

Second, reinforcing and energizing your plan with goals, with clear mental imagery where you’ve absolutely built vivid, distinct, sharp images of where you want to go and seeing yourself attaining that. You, moment to moment, day to day, affirm your successful outcomes through these written goals and through the passionate language you use inside of you about who you are, your potential and where you will go.

Third, you begin to overcome your fear, your resistance to change, by eliminating procrastination. By moving through that, by letting it go.

Fourth, you use the Formula for Success. You get your plan and your vision, you take action, you receive feedback, you redesign your actions and you go again.

And, fifth you build an unstoppable attitude because no one can stop you. Limits exist only in your mind, and unless you cling to those, and unless you hold onto those limits, you can have whatever you want.

A closing thought here. I have read nearly every book that Dr. Wayne Dyer ever wrote. I guess you could even say, he’s one of my heroes. What a brilliant, wonderful, creative, loving, passionate, compassionate human being. He’s done a significant amount of good.

There was a quote that came out of one of his books. Dyer said, “There is no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love, there’s only a scarcity of resolve to make it happen.” What a profound statement.

There is no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love, there’s only a scarcity of resolve to make it happen. Build your resolve. Affirm your desired reality, and take action daily as if you will achieve it.

You can be, you can do, you can have whatever you desire and are willing to take action toward.
