Actions Assist Attitudes

A great philosopher, who was also a ruler of the Roman Empire, Marcus Aurelius, said there are eight words that will determine your destiny:

“Our life is what our thoughts make it.”

If you focus on positive good things going on in your life, you will feel positive and good.

If you focus on scary, shameful, negative thoughts, you will feel lousy.

If you focus on illness thoughts you will feel sick.

If you focus on potential, positive, and what you can achieve, you will be more motivated and feel better.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said,

“A man is what he thinks about all day long.”

Norman Vincent Peale said,

“You are not what you think you are. But what you think–you are!”

The most vital lesson you can learn is the importance of managing your self-talk, watching what is going on in your mind.

Be absolutely clear about the self-talk that is running through your brain, what you are choosing to focus on, and the direction your thoughts are propelling your actions (or inactions.)

What Are You Choosing

Remember the hourglass with the grains of sand? Every grain, whether a positive or negative grain, is adding to the total. If you have more dark negative grains, the sand in the hourglass will be dark. If you have few of those and more light ones, the coloration of the hourglass will be lighter.

Your thoughts make you who you are. That is the x-factor that really drives your life.

I’m not saying you have to live inside a magic bubble or have an airy-fairy Pollyanna, everything is going to be wonderful, blissful, live on the clouds kind of attitude. That doesn’t work. That is not real.

You need to look at the facts, you need to analyze the facts, you need to make decisions, and you need to take action on what is real. And during that process you need to do all you can to steer your thinking down a positive pathway.

Directing Mental Traffic

If you are focused only on the negative, more of that will be in your life than is the positive. Deal with the negative and focus on the positive.

You need to think about issues in your life. You need to have concern about issues you encounter. But concern is different than worry. Concern means, I’m thinking about it, I’ve looked at it, I can see there is a difficulty, and I can take action about it or I cannot.

Worry is like a negative whirlpool that spirals around and around over the same thing/issue/difficulty again and again and again. Worry, anxiety, panic, fears, anger, doubt, are circular negative thinking patterns.

So be concerned about the things in life you need to be concerned over and keep focused on the possible positive options. Stop allowing the negatives to do the negative thinking spiral that leads you and sucks you down into the bottom of the whirlpool. It truly will drown you. That negative circular worry thinking pattern means you are going around in maddening and futile thinking patterns.

Use Your Physiology for Attitude

Dr. William James in the late 1800’s did an experiment with 160 college students. He recruited students who were struggling in college, who were feeling depressed, feeling ready to quit, having a hard time with their studies, and didn’t have much of a social life.

He got these students to participate in his physiology study. When they came to his office, he would have them stand up straight, put their shoulders back, and do jumping jacks or just jump around, while smiling, sometimes laughing for a couple of minutes.

At the end of that time, he would ask them how they felt. Almost every one of them said they felt like they had a little more energy.

He put on marching music and had them march around the office in time with the music. Big steps, swinging their arms, head up, chins up, smiles on their face, eyes wide open. After marching around his office for a couple minutes, he would then stop them and ask how they felt. Normally they reported feeling better, more excited, and more positive about things.

This physical movement process did not fix their problem, but it helped them feel better even in trying times. Dr. James went on to say,

“The solitary, voluntary path to cheerfulness, if your cheerfulness is lost, is to sit up and cheerfully and act and speak as if cheerfulness were already there.”

Move More

Does this simple trick work? Absolutely. If you begin to act like you feel better, you normally feel better. If you are lacking energy, and you are feeling tired, if you can get yourself to move for a couple of minutes, it will give you a temporary boost of energy.

You have to move yourself. Now does this fix the problem? No it does not. What it does though is give you a more positive, powerful, motivated feeling so you feel more like tackling whatever the problem is.

This is one of the basic truths of nature that can work miracles in our lives. If we can just get ourselves going, we can do those things that are difficult, we can move forward and make them happen.

You can take action. You can do things in a positive way. If you are focused on the negative, you are going to have a very tough time moving towards the positive. So you begin to put your body and your mind together in action. When you move your physiology, it gives you more mental and physical vitality and power.
