(…continued from last week)

Harold Wilkins said, “The world of achievement has always belonged to the optimist. We need to believe it’s possible to take action. We need to step out there.”

Arnold Glasgow said, “Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion, you must set yourself on fire.” We need to have passion; we need to have perseverance for our long term goals.

Psychologist Angela Duckworth spent years studying children and adults and found one characteristic, a significant predictor of success and it’s called grit. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future day in day out. Not just for a week, not just for a month but for years. You work at it. You hang in there, you are tenacious. Grit is having that long term ability to keep going, it makes a huge difference in who you are and how well things work for you.

We also need to make certain that we invest in our relationships. After following the lives of 268 Harvard undergraduate males from the classes of 1938 to 1940, psychiatrist George Vaillant concluded something you probably already know; love is a key to happiness. Even if someone succeeds at work, amasses piles of money and experiences good health, without loving relationships they wouldn’t be happy.

Dr. Vaillant found the longitudinal study over those years showed that happiness depends on two things; one is love, the other is finding a way to cope with life that does not push love away and brings personal power and strength to the individual.

Manage Your Thinking

Benjamin Disraeli said, “Through perseverance many people win success out of what seemed destined to be certain failure.”

We need to find a way to take care of ourselves. One of those strategies that can make a difference is to worry less. We apparently have some built-in thing inside of our brains that makes us want to worry. The human mind has numerous thoughts flowing through it every day, thousands upon thousands, of which scientists have found about 80% of them are either nonsense or really have no consequence.

You need to learn to shelve that worry habit. You need to learn to break free from it. It is important to keep in mind that most of your worries are unproductive; they remove the opportunity of having peace of mind and harmony in your life. One of the ways of breaking away from that is by being able to take a little down time to enjoy some ‘me time’.

Now there are people out there who are afraid to be alone, they are afraid to go off on their own. They don’t take the time to be alone but that ‘me time’, that time when it’s just you gives you the opportunity to quiet your mind. It gives you time to build a little more harmony inside of yourself, to think through things that you need to in order to grow your life and make you more at ease with all that’s going on around you.

You need to take some time to break free from all the demands of your life because they are many, personally and professionally. Having that me time gives you a bit of balance, it allows you to slow for a moment and reflect. Reflection is one of those traits that all powerful people take time to do.

Another thing that can also make a difference is to take time to enjoy nature. Get outside, if only for a few minutes, take a break; appreciate the trees, appreciate the grass, appreciate the shrubs, the flowers, appreciate the world around you. Nature has tranquility, nature has calmness. Find time to be out in nature.

Spend time away from the hustle, the bustle of the city. Find harmony in nature because it exists. It’s really up to each of us to take that moment away, to take a break. We need to because it assists us in being more at ease with our world and with our environment. Breathe the air of nature, get some quiet.
