Learning Everywhere, All The Time

Even if you are the expert, what can you learn from the people around you? There was a story that was told by Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, author of the book On Death and Dying. She made significant contributions to understanding the process of death, and helping other people cope with death. Whether it is the death of someone they love or their own.

She told the story about a time when she was working in a hospital. Before her insights into death and dying, she was working as a psychiatrist dealing with mentally ill patients, and occasionally with terminal patients.

As she entered the room of a terminally ill patient, she found that patient was in a very positive, up mood.

She was glad her patient felt good, but was curious if there was something that had helped generate this positive mood.

Over a period of weeks, she noticed that whenever one housekeeper had been in patients rooms cleaning prior to Dr. Ross’s visit, the patients were normally more “up”. The housekeeper seemed to lift other peoples’ spirits whenever she was around.

What she realized was that this housekeeper grew up in a culture, that when people were dying, they kept them home. They did everything they could to talk and act in a positive way around this ill person. They would tell them stories that were inspiring and positive so that that person felt better during this moment of need.

Once she understood what this woman was doing, Dr. Ross modeled that positive way of treating terminal patients. She said that was some of the most valuable teaching she ever received for dealing with death and dying. These insights became part of her curriculum when she taught healthcare providers to learn to deal with the terminally ill.

Dr. Ross was open to a teachable moment. She saw the wisdom and high value generated by this compassionate housekeeper.

Moving Forward Positively

When you get into a conflict, there is a natural tendency to shut down or take a strong confrontive position. That pause moment and that “Please tell me more” helps us learn. So, when you move into a teachable moment, you will grow and everyone around you will grow.

Take time to proactively interact with the people around you. Make sure you (and they if you can) are having teachable moments.

When you approach people in a positive way, they open up. When you approach them in a negative or a caustic way, they tend to shut down. By the same token, if there is a conflict going on and you remain open and you can stay a little more positive, you have a teachable moment for you. You can learn from those things going on around you and the people you are experiencing.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Unless you do something beyond what you’ve already mastered, unless you try to do new things, you will never grow.”

We need to make sure that we are open, we are growing. The list we talked about a moment ago is central to your movement. Breaking free, waking up and going forward means you are aware of what’s going on around you and you are making choices. As you’re making choices through the analysis you’ve done and through prioritizing what’s top of your list, you can then move forward into a more effective interpersonal experience.

Things don’t change–we change. The circumstance you presently find yourself is one of your own creation. Don’t you like it? Aren’t you thrilled with it? If you’re not, choose something different.

It’s now time to step-up. No one can take you anywhere except where you want to go. It is a personal choice to step-up and make a difference, or to keep doing the same thing over and over.

Right now you have the opportunity to make your life completely different. Take the time to begin taking action.

You deserve to have great things, so take a little bit of time to make your life what you want it to be. Wake up and go for it! This is not a rehearsal–it is the playoffs every single day of your life.

So today, as you choose to move forward, allow circumstances to be your teacher. Every moment is a learnable, teachable moment. Step into it. Use the situations you find yourself in to increase awareness and knowledge so you can move into a more positive future.

This is your day. Make today a great day!
