Making Better Choices

All of us tend to get stuck in ruts. We have a tendency to stop and fixate on certain things and we just don’t move. Everybody has stuff, we have physical stuff and we have emotional and mental stuff. You have relationship stuff, you have stuff about self-esteem and how you feel about you.

You have confidence stuff, you have clothing stuff, you have household stuff. We tend to fixate on things and hang on to them tenaciously. Whether they are of real value to us or not, in many circumstances is secondary.

Perspective Shifter

There’s a man who gave a new perspective to some of this and it was the great Will Rogers. He had a few insights about being stuck or hanging on to things.

Will said, “If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you need to do is stop digging.”

Also, to break free of some of this stuck-ness he said, “Chaotic action is definitely preferable to orderly inaction.”

Also in many cases when people get stuck they have a tendency to feel anxious or worried. Rogers said “Worry is like paying a debt that may never come due.”

Pay Attention to Now

Sometimes because of our concern, we tend to hang on to things that don’t work for us and we stay stuck in them. For instance, have you ever had an unsatisfying or unrewarding job and you kept doing it even though you didn’t want to be there because you felt stuck?

Have you ever gone through a negative experience with someone over and over and over and you don’t ever confront the issue, you just keep doing the same old pattern and the problem still stays there?

Have you ever been bored or scared with the current situation and rather than risk something new you just keep doing the same thing because you’re nervous about something else?

Or you stop yourself from reaching out to somebody who you could make a connection with–you like them, you admire them, you think it would be great to know them better or to have them in your life, but you never take action because of your nervousness?

Maybe you continue to practice unhealthy health patterns or nutritional patterns even though you know ‘I really shouldn’t be doing this’? Or you avoid an important decision that needs to be made and you put it off.

Each of those are stuck states.

Every moment of every day we have the power to choose our response to any situation we encounter–every moment of every day.

Every moment is a new moment, it doesn’t matter so much what really happened yesterday or what’s coming tomorrow. It’s ‘What am I doing right now? What am I doing in the next second, two seconds, five seconds, ten seconds?’ We need to think about that because every moment is a new opportunity for us to make a difference. You have choices to make and every choice is influenced by how you see the world.

Safe or Dangerous

Albert Einstein was being interviewed by journalists. They asked him, “What is the most important thing you’ve ever contemplated?”

Einstein paused a moment, thought about it and replied, “Probably the most important question any of us could ask ourselves or the most important thing we could ponder is–is the world a safe place?”

What a very powerful question. “Is the world a safe place?”

If you think the world is a safe place then you’re open, you’re free, you can experiment, you can try things, you can move, you can travel, you can innovate.

If on the other hand the world is not a safe place, you won’t take risks, you won’t learn, you won’t grow, you won’t change, you won’t experiment because there’s too much threat.

With each of these choice points that we encounter, we need to see if this is safe or is it not? If it’s safe, we take action, we learn, we grow. If it’s not safe, we hold back, we pause, we hesitate and resist. You continuously have a choice moment to moment, every single day, as to what you will do and what you will not do.
