You Make The Choice

There is no more self-empowering statement than, “I did this because I chose to do this.”

Write this down and put this in multiple places so you think and say it over and over. “I did this because I chose to do this.”

It’s not good or bad, it is not right or wrong. Just ‘I did it because that’s what I decided to do’. Own it. Step up to it. It was your decision, right or wrong—your decision. You did it because you decided to do it.

How would you like to live longer? How would you like to have more energy and look the way you really want to look? It really isn’t that tough. It might be a bit of a challenge but it really isn’t as hard as a lot of people think it is. There are a few things you need to do. You need to have reasonable nutrition. Not perfect, just reasonable.

If you are like Wimpy in the old Popeye cartoons, you can’t just eat burgers every meal–breakfast, lunch and dinner. Have a burger sometimes but you need to also have other foods. You’ve got to have fruits and vegetables and grains besides burgers. Pie’s good stuff but you’re not going to be eating a pie a day, right? Be reasonable with your nutrition.

Get enough aerobic exercise. You need to do something; walk, lift some weights. You don’t have to be a body builder, just a little bit of weights is good for your structure. It’s good for your physiology, your muscles, your joints, it’s good for everything. So get a little bit of aerobic exercise; walking, lifting weights.

Drink water. Make sure you have plenty of fluids in your body. It cleans the toxins out, it cleans up the body. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Seven to eight hours a night is good for the majority of people.

All of that is a good beginning. But even more important than these – the good nutrition, the exercise, the water, the rest – even more important than these to your longevity and your energy is number one, being optimistic about your life and its possibilities.

Handle Your Brain

And I don’t mean you’ve got to be airy fairy sitting around wishful thinking all the time, being Pollyanna about everything. That’s not what I’m saying. But you have to be realistic. You have plans of action, you have vision, you think about your life and your possibilities and what you are willing to do to make it happen.

And number two which is going to be a real stretch for many of you, you have to give-up worrying. “Oh no, I can’t do that, there’s so much good stuff to worry about; my health, my family members’ health, the terrible economy, there’s a war, lack of money – you know that’s always a good one to worry about.”

“What about credit card debt? Yeah, that’s a good one. I have a clunker car. I have a horrible boss who beats me every few hours. He sets his alarm clock so then he pulls out his bullwhip and he comes back and he whips me again regularly just to make sure I’m in shape. I’ve got to worry about that, don’t I?” And on and on and on and on.

Give-up worrying, it’s one of the best things you could reach for. If there was an emotion to eradicate from the planet, and if I was to pick two of them – my number one would be worry, my number two would be guilt, because most people get nothing from guilt except feeling bad.

Everyone knows worry isn’t good for us—right? You’ve heard it. You’ve probably even said it. But worriers worry, then they get mad at themselves for worrying, then they worry about worrying too much. There’s something wrong with this picture. Then they get mad because they’ve been worrying.

It’s an endless vicious cycle. It goes around and around and around. But worry’s got to go. Worry can ruin your health; mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, sexual, financial. Worry can destroy it all!
