Perspective is Power
Josh Billings (1818-1885) was a cowboy humorist. He was a buddy of Mark Twain, and they often played off of one another. There was a battle of wits between them that was carried on in one newspaper series for months.
These humorous thoughts have value. Read one–then think a moment. Not only are they true (for the most part) but they have wisdom encased within them.
–“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”
–“As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.”
–“Don’t take the bull by the horns, take him by the tail; then you can let go when you want to.”
–“Flattery is like cologne water–to be smelt of, not swallowed.”
–“Health is like money–we never have a true idea of its value until we lose it.”
–“It is much easier to repent of sins that we have committed, than to repent of those we intend to commit.”
–“It’s not ignorance does so much damage; it’s knowing so darned much that ain’t so.”
–“Laughing is the sensation of feeling good all over and showing it principally in one spot.”
–“Genius ain’t nothing more than elegant common sense.”
–“One of the greatest victories you can gain over someone, is to beat them at politeness.” (Mark Twain used to say, “Politeness never goes out of style.”)
–“Silence is one of the hardest arguments to refute.”
Do yourself a favor and pick one of these thoughts to carry with you all day. It doesn’t matter which one. Write it on a piece of paper–stick it in your pocket–and occasionally pull it out and look at it throughout your day. Let it shift your perspective just a bit, within what ever earth shaking thing you are achieving.
