Excuses Are Self Perpetuating

These are reasons for excuses, and they generally lead to keeping on making more excuses—because like produces like. You make an excuse you need to make another excuse. It just goes on and on. It’s rather self-perpetuating actually.

Whereas results come from a decision and an action to do something, create money, better sports performance, increase your happiness, lose weight, learn a new skill, take up a new program, whatever it is, excuses lead to excuses. Decisions lead to results. A decision is a choice of focus and action, leading toward the achievement of a goal.

Those of you who know me and have gone through my programs have heard me talk about the formula for success. I talk about it in detail also in my two-book program Unleash Your Success.

The Formula For Success

The Formula For Success has four components. Number one, you create a goal and a vision of the desired outcome. You think about where you want to get to. You think about what you want to have happen. You then mentally make this image of this outcome you want to have, and you see it done. You see the vision of the desired outcome ultimately happening. You first have to create this picture in your mind and feel it as real to start off on the formula for success.

The second part of the Formula is you make a step-by-step plan of action. If I’m going to get here then I need to do this, this, this, this and this. Then once you figure out what those steps are you prioritize them. This one has to be done first, then you do that one, then you do that one, then you do that one, then you do that one.

It’s like if you’re building a house you don’t try and roof it before you pour the foundation because there’s nothing to roof. You first get the land, you dig a trench, you pour the foundation, et cetera, et cetera. So you make a step-by-step plan of how you’re going to achieve that goal, that vision and that outcome.

The third step is you take action. You know where you want to go, number one. You made a plan of how to get there, number two. And so third you take action towards your goal. You step out there. You do something. Right, wrong, in between. You give it the best shot you’ve got, but you go for it. You move, you take action; you do something toward that end that you want to achieve.

And then fourth, you observe your results. Are you on track? Are you off track? You make a decision and then you revise your action plan and you go again. So point four, observe the results, decide if you’re on or off track, revise it, improve it in any way you can if it needs revision, you then take action again. That’s the Formula For Success. One, create a goal and a vision. Two, make a step-by-step plan. Three, take action. Four, observe the results, revise and go again.

To achieve whatever you want, you have to do this. If you think about anything in your life you’ve developed strengths in, you did this. You may have done it unconsciously but you did it. Making excuses gets in the way, it blocks the creativity, the energy, the vitality and the action you need because you’re trying to hide something. Breaking out of that is absolutely central to living a fulfilling, purposeful life.
