Internal Computations

Your internal computations are the self-talk inside of your head and the self-talk inside of the other person’s head. What are you thinking, what are you telling yourself? Is it positive? Is it negative? It shows; watch what your internal dialogue is.

You need to get a handle on what’s going on inside of your head because if you don’t manage that, especially if you are presenting or interacting with someone else and trying to create presence, it can pull the props right out from under you and the presentation.

If your thinking pattern is “Oh this is terrible. I’m never going to do this well. I can’t believe how badly this is going. This is just going to be a fiasco. I can see it right now.” do you really think you are going to be showing a positive internal state? Do you think you’ll be looking like you’re on top of your game if that’s your internal dialogue? I don’t think so.

Watch what your mind is telling you. That alone, managing your internal dialogue is a gigantic component to making this work. To making your life more effective and for having those great relationships, to being persuasive and having presence that moves you forward. Watch what your thinking patterns are saying.

Emotions Engaged

There was a piece of research done at Stanford University to find out how long the normal emotion lasts. There are only four creators of all emotions known to medicine and psychology. Chemical or hormonal change in the body, damage to the brain itself, your thinking patterns and your internal dialogue and something happening to your physiology.

Of those four ways emotions are created your internal self-talk creates between 65 to 75 percent of all emotions. When I am telling myself things, are the things I’m telling me empowering me? Are they making me feel more confident or are they terrifying me and making me afraid of what’s coming? Think about that. It shows also so watch your internal dialogue and internal computations.

How You Use Your Body

A third component to personality is our external behavior. What is happening with your physiology. How do you hold yourself? Are you standing erect and strong, or do you look slumped over with no energy. Your external behavior and how you use your physiology, remember in those nonverbal dimensions we talked about, gesturing and body posture are two biggies. External behavior is how are you using and presenting your physiology.

If you have a powerful internal state it will help you have a better mental dialogue and it will allow you to feel more powerful physiologically. If you have a great presence, physiology and you’re standing tall, your internal state will be a better mood and your internal dialogue will be better. If on the other hand you have a positive powerful internal dialogue your mood and feeling will be more up and your physiology and external behavior will be better. Any one of those affects the other two. Get them in control, manage them now, because they show to all the people you are interacting with.

This is part of building charisma is managing your internal state, your self-talk and mental images, and your external behavior or the way you use your physiology. Manage these well and you have more power, persuasion and influence in all interactions.
