(…continued from last week)

More Attitudes & Emotions of Power

President Thomas Jefferson said, “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal. Nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” Confidence and determination are attitudes of a winner. If you look at the greatest, most successful people in the world, you will find confidence and determination are underpinnings of much of what they do.

The fifth attitude of proactiveness is flexibility. Remember we talked about those action signals; fear, frustration, overwhelmed, disappointment, guilt, sadness, et cetera. Flexibility. Those signals say that a change is needed. That’s what they’re telling you. They’re signaling ‘I need to do something different’.

There are many ways up any mountain. I don’t care which mountain it is, there are lots of ways. Some are better, some are worse, some are easier, some are harder. But to get to where you need to go you have to be flexible. You need to be willing to change. You have to be able to do what you can do and if you run into a barrier say, “Hmm, what’s another way? Well I’ll try that.”

One trait of people who excel, who achieve highly, is that when they run into a barrier instead of going, “Oh no, a barrier. Gee what I’m I gonna do?” they go, “Hmm, how can I get around, over, under, through this sucker.” And then they do it. They try it again and if it blocks them again they go again. They just keep at it until they have either achieved what they want or it is absolutely proven beyond a shadow of a doubt there’s got to be something different to do.

It can be difficult and you may have resistance, yet you need to be able to have flex like the willow when the storms blow through your life. Flexibility is absolutely crucial to achieving what you want to achieve.

The sixth trait, the sixth attitude, is that we make a contribution. There is nobody who doesn’t need to feel like they bring value to the table. Everyone does, children right up to the elderly, need to feel like they make a difference. We need to feel like what we give and what we do has importance to somebody, somewhere, sometime.

There is a research paper that was written a number of years ago by a gerontologist. He said he watched lots of elderly just wither away when they no longer had any value; when they no longer had friends that they could make laugh, when they no longer had card games that they could play because their friends were gone, when they no longer felt vital and valued by the people around them.

He watched them. He said, “I could just watch them wither away. When I gave them something to do, even a little project to help out, often times their spirits would perk up and their health would improve.”

Do not bleed your life dry being a martyr in your giving either. I’m not talking about making a contribution to the point where you are now living in the poor house because you gave everything away. That’s silly. That isn’t good for you; it is not good for anyone else either.

The secret of living is giving. It energizes you. It gives you a feeling of purpose. Read to a child, take care of someone’s pet and help them, mow a lawn for somebody who needs assistance, tutor somebody in a skill, do something that makes you feel like you have value and it energizes your life.

The seventh and the last of these principles for energizing your life is to create vitality. Do you feel alive? Do you feel powerful, energetic, like you have the mental and physical stamina to get up, to launch into your activities. Do you? You’d better.

Health is a blend of mind and body, and there is an undeniable connection, medicine and psychology has proven and uncovered. You need to get some exercise. Move your body, do something. Get a little cardio. You don’t have to put in 10 hours a day exercising, but get a little exercise. Eat semi-well.

Get some sleep. You don’t have to sleep 12 hours a day but just get some rest. Don’t burn the candle at both ends all the time. Sometimes okay, not all the time. Be happy. Uplift your energy, your emotions; focus them in a positive way. Move your physiology, get your body moving.

Learn new things, things that you find fun, that you find stimulating, whatever it is. Playing a card game, finding a new attribute about your community that you like, visit places you haven’t been for a long time. Stimulate yourself. Find something fun or stimulating. All of this contributes to being vital. Breathe. Breathe, you need oxygen. Take in air, it’s good for you.

Sitting does not conserve your energy. If all you do is sit it actually drains you. Yes, I know you’ve got to sit down sometimes but sitting drains your energy. Get out of your chair, move, stand up more. Most people spend their whole day sitting at a desk. Get out of your chair once in awhile. If you can do part of your work standing up, it’s much better for you.

Get your physiology in motion. Expend energy; it gives you a feeling of having more energy when you get up and get moving. It also lifts your mood. When you move your body, it stimulates your brain functions also.

If you think about the difference between the physiology of excitement and the physiology of depression, are there any differences? A thousand percent. The physiology of depression is more slumped over, head down, speaking more softly; voice tone’s lower, shuffling in movement, not much energy.

The physiology of excitement and passion is standing up more, eyes are more open, head is up, voice tones are brighter, crisper, faster. You move your physiology more, you’re more dynamic. That alone can lift your mood.

It’s been proven over and over and over. So take the time to use your physiology to get yourself in motion. Your vitality goes up as you expend energy. Take the time; make it happen on a daily basis.

Make Today a Great Day

Over the next days and weeks take time to review these powerful concepts. Take care of yourself. Assist others who need a boost. Watch your attitude and attend to the signs that signal change and show you it’s time to move forward. Be flexible, open up a bit.

Make a conscious decision to live with passion, vitality, gratitude and cheerfulness. Remember, people are seeing you move through your day. You are a model. Whether you want to be or not people are watching you and they’re taking hints from you.

Which would you rather see, somebody who’s excited and having a good time or somebody who’s not? Which is more attractive to you? Which are you more drawn to? As you move with grace and power you energize your life and you assist other people in seeing what’s possible by controlling your attitudes and your actions.

Eileen Caddy, author and one of the founders of the Findhorn Project said, “Set your sights high, the higher the better. Expect the most wonderful things to happen. Not in the future, but right now. Realize that nothing is too good. Allow absolutely nothing to hamper you or hold you up in any way.” Set your sights high. Make your life come alive. Put power and passion and energy into everything you do.
