Clearing Past Programming

The fifth secret to enhancing the mind-body connection is clearing old programming or releasing old patterns.

I mentioned before about awareness, choice and control. You need to be aware of what’s going on around you. You need to be aware of what’s going on inside of you. Through your awareness outside and inside, you can make better choices about what you are going to do, how you’re going to respond, what you’re going to think, your approach, and through that you will gain better control of yourself and the interactions you have with the world around you.

This awareness—choice—control process is absolutely central to the releasing old patterns process. Dr. Herbert Benson, who was the head of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, has created major inroads into change in the application of the mind-body connection.

The process I’m going to describe to you, developed by Dr. Benson at Massachusetts General Hospital, has been used to help athletes who plateaued in their skill sets and couldn’t seem to break through to the next level. It’s also been used with patients whose treatment is not working, with business people who are trying to break old habits or install new ideas, and with students who want to be better at learning and have more positive interactions with others.

The Release

So what is this process that Dr. Benson created that he uses at Massachusetts General? What he found is that you envision the negativity, you release it and get rid of it and then what you leave behind is a positive hopeful expectation of what’s going on.

Here’s how to do this: Read a brief section or paragraph. Close your eyes or let your gaze go on a blank wall or an object. Do the suggested chunk of the process. Feel the experience of that segment. Open your eyes—read the next portion—do it—notice the shifts. Read the next—do it, etc. Easy, no hurry, no hassle. Just work through it at your own pace.

As you do this you can feel the internal shift. It works very rapidly. Take your time with this process. This is not a race to see how fast you can do this. Focus. It only takes minutes, so relax and allow this to unfold—not rush and try to bulldoze your way through it. This is a meditative process where you are assisting your subconscious mind to change an old program. Be at ease with moving through this.

Now—envision something where you feel stuck. Maybe it’s a habit. Perhaps it’s something you’ve tried to do but just never quite accomplished, or maybe like some of those athletes you’ve plateaued at something, personal or professional.

Give It a Form

What does that negative look like, if you had to give it a form is it like a dark cloud? Is it like a ball of static? Is it a glowing energy. Is it gaseous, liquid, or solid? Does it have color? Is it like a little cloud shooting out bolts of lightening? What does that old programming, that old stuck pattern look like in your mind? If you had to give it a form, choose the form that it would look like.

Imagine that inside of that form is this old programming, old pattern, that stuckness. See it in your mind, envision it, what does it look like? See it out there in front of you just hovering. Is it heavy, is it light, is it thick, is it thin? What does that thing contain, that old pattern, that old programming, that old negative stuff. Have this “thing” out there in front of you.

Create a Vessel to Put It In

Now envision a vessel right out in front of you that you could put this in. This vessel is strong, and tight enough, to securely seal away this old pattern. It’s a vessel which would contain it with ease. It could be a box with a lid that could close down over it. It may or may not have a lock.

Perhaps the container is a large vase with a top that fits on it. Perhaps it’s a jar of some type that you could put a stopper in. Envision a vessel that you could put it in, and seal it up.

Insert the Stuck Pattern

Now see that old pattern you want to release, with the vessel near by it. Insert it into the vessel. And with it securely inside, seal the vessel. Close it—stop it up—whatever you do to put a lid on the container. Next, seal it. Whether that is taping it shut, locking a lock, putting sealing wax around the lid to ensure a tight seal, using a high powered energy to wrap it in—just seal it tightly so the old can not escape. You could release it later if you chose to, but for now it’s completely sealed in this container.

Mentally Acknowledge

Mentally give yourself a slight acknowledgement for let that thing go. You’ve made a conscious choice to have a different reality from this point forward. Feel relaxed and at ease within about this new step into a better tomorrow.

Release It Away

You’re going to let that old negative pattern go. It now resides in a sealed container.

Now begin to have it drift away, moving out toward the horizon. Have it float farther and farther away, until it’s only a teeny tiny dot in the distant horizon. Leave it as a tiny dot that you can see, way out there in the distance. It’s still there but it has no affect over you. Leave it there so if you ever chose to retrieve it, you could. But you don’t really need it, so it’s fully released by you and has no further effect on you.

Feel the Difference

All feelings and states of mind are experienced in our body. So for just a moment, notice the internal shift that’s taken place with that gone. Since that old pattern has been released and sent it away, notice how much lighter you feel. Notice how freeing it feels. There is a more “up” feeling within you. You can breathe easier.

Envision the New

What new pattern is going to take its place? Feeling lighter, more energized, more proactive, more positive—what is the “thing” and pattern that’s going to replace the old released? See the new floating out in front of you. It contains all the success and capabilities you could desire.

Bring that inside of you, so that it resides in your body. Allow it to flow out into your entire physiology—head, torso, arms, hands, legs and feet. Feel that positive all over—looking out of the eyes of the person who has that skill.

See This Applied In Your Actions

Imagine a situation where this new skill is applied and you are getting a great result. See the end. If it’s athletics—envision the result you desire done! See winning. See people acknowledging your great achievement. Feel the success of completing it successfully. If it’s a business speech you had to give, see people congratulating you on a great presentation, feel the success of having done well, etc. See it done!

As you now imagine this done, right here and now, you are building the neuro-pathway in your brain of success. Your brain is being programmed that you’ve already done this successfully. Thinking success at this moment, your mind has built a new pattern that you’ve achieved it, that this is your reality. That you can do this.

See—Hear—Feel Within

Notice how it feels inside of you, as you see the thing you wanted to be able to do, and envision it successfully done.

See it as done-the athletic performance, writing the paper, giving the speech, taking time to exercise, having better health. It’s done. Notice how good it feels when you think about it successfully completed. The old programming is gone. A new positive response is here within you. It is absolutely part of who you are right now. Notice how positive and encouraging that feels.

Dr. Benson’s Results

What Dr. Benson showed is that when you make a conscious decision to release an old pattern you have power. When you place it in front of you, name it by giving it shape, form, size, weight, volume and sound if appropriate, and then place it in a vessel so you can remove it—you awaken energy to change. As you then step into seeing a new pattern done successfully, it awakens a belief that life can be different. This process has been used with thousands, in changing multitudes of old habitual patterns.

You can do this anytime, just like the athletes, the students, the business people have before you. The more times you apply this to the more powerfully the process works for you.
