The 6 Secrets to Applying the Mind-Body Connection (Part 8)

(…continued from last week)

Good Mental Hygiene

The sixth secret to having great mind-body connection is mental hygiene. It has many different components that correspond to it, but one of the biggest is making sure you’re taking care of your brain waves.

You have four primary brain waves – beta, alpha, theta and delta. Beta corresponds to your wide awake thinking processes. Alpha, theta and delta are all brain waves that correspond from mildly relaxed to the deepest levels of sleep.

Conscious Thought

When you are thinking you’re using primarily your beta brain waves. The beta brain wave is a small relatively fast, 14 cycles per second brain wave.

Research has shown that when you become stressed it becomes erratic, it has many more peaks and valleys than during normal thinking. Your normal thinking pattern is a fairly smooth brain wave, just small peaks and valleys as it moves along. But that erratic, large spikes up and down when you become stressed, is the result of a negative thinking pattern. It’s a lack of mental hygiene.

So what we have to do is to find a way to focus on the positive and detach from the negativity. Because that erratic brain wave causes a physiological response in your body.

The erratic brain wave sends a fight or flight response into the brain and into the body. The brain begins to react and tell you, don’t do this, watch out, you’re in trouble and releases stress neurochemicals into the body so the body prepares to fight or run.

Guard Against the Negative

That is not very helpful if what you’re actually doing is sitting at your desk talking to your boss. The fight or flight response is inappropriate, unless your boss happens to pull out a pistol and point it at you. You probably don’t need to have the fight or flight response going on. You need to think more logically, more rationally and more straight forward.

Mental hygiene means cleaning up that negative self talk. That stress brain wave pattern is not to your benefit, you need to let it go, relax, calm yourself.

Have you ever said to yourself, “How could I’ve been so stupid to have done ___?“, whatever it was, or “Boy what a dumb thing to do.” or “I’ll never be able to do ______” (golf under a certain score, or do mechanical work on my car, play the piano beautifully, grow vegetables that thrive instead of die , write a book, etc.) or “I’m just no good at ______” (a sport, a hobby, dealing with people, speaking in public, whatever it happens to be.)

Have you said those things to yourself? You have to catch that erratic negative thinking. That is good mental hygiene to catch it and to do something with it.

Catch and Release

When you think, “How could I have been so stupid to have done that?” instead of going down that negative pathway, you catch it, you stop and think, “Wait I don’t want to go there!” Instead of thinking that negative choose, “Alright, now what could I have done differently instead of that?” or “What can I do differently next time?” or “How can I have a better reaction next time I am in that situation?” or “What can I do to improve it.”

When you tell yourself, “I’m just no good at ______” (doing carpentry, working on a car, golfing, playing the piano, speaking in public) you’ve got to catch it. You’ve got to turn it around. You’ve got to have good mental hygiene and instead think, “Wait! That’s difficult but with practice I’ll improve at it. That didn’t work so what else can I do? How many other ways can I do this? How many other ways can I practice this so that I can improve?”

Good mental hygiene means you look for the possibilities. You turn the negative thinking around, you make it so that you ask yourself questions of possibilities, i.e., “That didn’t work, so what else can I do. How many other ways can I ______?” Fill in the blank.

You need to have positive mental hygiene because ultimately the mind-body connection when you have negative thinking triggers erratic stress thinking patterns which releases neurochemicals that make tension in the body. That in turn causes more negativity because you feel out of sorts.

Good mental hygiene means I catch that negative, I stop it and I immediately turn it around.

You think about the possibilities and those possibilities raise you up, give you more encouragement and slow down and quiet that erratic negative self-talk pattern. So mental hygiene helps move you from where you are today to where you want to be tomorrow. You have to get control of the beta brain wave’s stress response that results from the negative thinking because that takes you off your game every time.

Keep on Moving

Will you make mistakes, absolutely? Are you perfect at doing most things? Probably not. Even if you’re someone who’s played piano for 30 years and you’ve played thousands upon thousands of songs you’re probably at least occasionally going to hit a wrong note.

That’s reality, we are imperfect beings. So when something happens that is not the way you want it don’t make it all or nothing, don’t go down in the dumps. Turn it around, use good mental hygiene, come up with a possibility or come up with a way to think about new things.

You have to focus on what you want not on what you don’t want. When you focus on the negativity you will have more negativity. When you focus on possibilities and potentials you’ll have more possibilities, more options, more potentials. So make sure your mental focus is on where to go, and what you want to do, not on what you don’t want.
