Step Into Responsibility

Henry David Thoreau, in his writings in Walden said, “I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.”

One of the most pervasive myths in the world, in all cultures, and especially in American culture, is that we’re entitled to having a wonderful life. That somehow, somewhere, somebody is going to make our life absolutely wonderful, continuously happy, exciting career, that everything is going to fall in place.

I call this magical thinking. We must be taking action, we must do something. We have to have a goal, we have to have a vision, we have to have a purpose, we have to look down the road and choose the direction.

In truth, the one thing we have to learn is there’s really only one person responsible for the quality of life you live. Guess who? Of course it’s you for you. It’s me for me. It’s your friend’s responsibility for their own lives.

If you want to be successful, if you truly want to have the greatest life you possibly can, then you have to step up to that. 100% responsibility for everything you experience. Everything!

Breaking the Conditioning

Many people have been conditioned to blame something outside of us for the parts of life we don’t like, or the reason things didn’t go the way we wanted. All too often I see people blame their parents, their bosses, their friends, their spouses, the media, the government, the lack of money, the lack of foresight, the weather, the economy, astrology; or some other person or thing that is outside of them.

We really have to look within. There’s only one reason why people blame the outside world, why they don’t own it themselves, why they make excuses, why they would lie, why they would try and cover up, why they don’t own the responsibility. It is because they are afraid of something. It’s fear.

It lets them off the hook from being accountable. It lets them off the hook from being the one who has to make a difference. Fear based emotion gets in our way. If you want to create the life of your dreams, and you can, then you have to take 100% responsibility for everything your life.

Are there people at work who you have difficulties with? Quit waiting for them to change. Step up to doing something to make it better yourself.

Do you have any habit patterns of nutrition, or exercise, or lack of exercise, that if you were to change tonight would make a difference in your health? Is there something in your environment that you think about that would be nice to have different, but you just don’t ever get quite get around to changing it?

Is there a mindset, that perhaps you’ve carried for years about your health, about your relationships, about where you grow up, that may get in your way and stop you from being on you can be?

There’s a musician friend years ago, who said, “I wrote a lot of music, but I never recorded any because I was worried about whether people would like it or not. What if they don’t like it? What if they a judge me and think I’m a poor musician?” He then began to move past that, started recording, and has done very well.
