How to Improve Whole Brain Functioning

The science of Kinesiology is the study of movement and its relation to the nervous system. Using it appropriately can stimulate greater whole brain functioning.
The “Cross Crawl” exercise works from the idea that when we are born our nervous systems are homolateral–meaning the right brain controls the movement on the left of the body and vice versa.
The cross crawl uses movement principles and rhythm to enhance usage of the whole brain all at once.
From research with babies it’s was discovered that the cross crawl process lights up neural circuits in a whole brain fashion. By the same token, for adults cross crawls are believed to trigger an energizing of brain function by promoting right-left brain communication through the corpus callosum. It improves information flow between the two hemispheres. It is useful for spelling, writing, listening, reading and comprehension.
This exercise can be done sitting or standing. Here’s how to use the cross crawl exercise.
As an example, let’s assume you are doing this standing. You alternate lifting one leg after the other, as if you are marching at a comfortable pace. You raise it high enough that you can reach over with your opposite hand and touch your knee as you lift it–left hand to right knee, and right hand to left knee.
For each hand and knee touch, your hands go from up out in front of you down to the opposite knee. Then as you lift the other leg, that hand moves up and away and the alternate arm/hand move down and in. So your hands start up and out in front of you, and move down and across as the opposite leg comes up.
Again, this is like a slow comfortable march. Just doing this either sitting or standing for about 2 minutes will trigger more whole brain activity. Brain fitness is crucial to aging well, and healthy mind/brain/body connection.
