How to Improve Your NonVerbal Communication, Part III

Another aspect of this nonverbal communication is how you use your gestures.

There are people who gesture so much it’s like they are a windmill, waving their arms and hands all over the place, all of the time. Don’t overdo it. A little gesturing with your hands or arms is a good thing. It shows connection, it shows movement back and forth between you. Think about what you do.

Have you ever seen one of these dances like the hula where their hands are so expressive? They tell the entire story by how they move their body and how they move their hands to do incredible things. Or watch the mime. Pay attention to how you gesture and use your physiology. Again, it sends a message.

Body Posturing

The fifth of these interactions is how you hold your body. If you are talking to someone and they are slumped down in their chair, they have their chin resting on their hand, as they stare at the floor, their legs are spread apart, their face is slack, maybe mouth is hanging open as they are listening to you—does that send a message? Absolutely.

Someone who is sitting up, leaning forward in their chair, making eye contact with you, perhaps a smile on their face, nodding their head, does that send a different message? Without a doubt it does.

Pay attention to your posture. What signals are you giving off when you are communicating with someone else? If you want to have greater presence you need to be more up, you need to be more open, you need to have your eyes in their direction while you are moving your physiology and interacting. Pay attention to your posture, it sends a message.

Facial Expression

The sixth of these dimensions of nonverbal communication which can enhance or diminish your presence is your facial expression. What is the very first thing that people see when they come in contact with you? Your face.

What do you normally look like? Are you frowning? Do you look like you just tried to eat a lemon? Or are you someone whose face is more relaxed, perhaps a little smile on your face? Do you at least have relaxed facial muscles? You don’t necessarily want to walk around grinning all the time because if you do people will wonder what you’re up to. But you do want to have a presence on your face that is more positive.

There was a good friend who told me about one of his secretaries who was always frowning. It created tension in the office for everyone without knowing it, until they figured out that her frown was pushing everybody’s buttons. Watch your facial expression.

Pay attention to what you look like. Again, you don’t have to smile all the time but just relax your face. Lift your eyebrows a little bit so your eyes are a little more open. Relax your muscles, pay attention to your face. It makes a giant difference because this is one of the first things people notice.
