Proactively Focus Your Beliefs & Harness Your Mental Power

Your mental focus and belief systems have the power to create or to destroy.

Dr. Henry Beecher of Harvard Medical School proved that the brain has the ability to override the effects of drugs. The power of belief is absolutely crucial to healing and health. He spent much of his career studying beliefs that make the internal healing energy come alive. He proved that belief systems can be an integral part of healing ourselves and making medicine more effective.

In one research study Dr. Beecher used 100 student volunteers. He had each volunteer take two test drugs. One drug was in a red capsule, the other was in a blue. He told the students that the red capsules were a super stimulant. When you take these and they’re going to make you feel wired, very stimulated, rapidly. The other drug in the blue capsules, were said to be a tranquilizer that rapidly made you feel relaxed, calm, even sleepy.

In reality, what Dr. Beecher had done was reversed the drugs in the capsules. The red capsule actually was a powerful barbiturate and the blue capsule contained a strong amphetamine. But the interesting thing that Dr. Beecher observed was that the students reacted as they thought the pills were supposed to be, not as they actually were.

In other words, the red capsule which they had been told was a stimulant was actually a barbiturate. Yet, they felt hyper, they revved up, their hearts rates increased, their body sensations became more acute and their brain waves became more excited.

And when they took the blue capsule, which they were told was a tranquilizer but was actually an amphetamine they reacted to it as if it really was a tranquilizer.

With the blue capsule their heart rate slowed, their body sensations diminished, their brain waves became more lethargic. In many cases they felt like they wanted to sleep. Their bodies aligned with their beliefs, not with the drug that they had actually taken.

The power of the brain and belief system overrode the actual drug and reversed the effect. Amazing!

Your beliefs control your reality. What you believe to be real is real for you. People treat beliefs as if they are a thing, an object, but they aren’t. They are just a concept and a feeling of certainty about something. It’s that feeling of knowing. It’s that feeling of ‘yes, this is true’.

Your gut feeling about a person, place, thing, piece of knowledge, your body, etc., is what makes the belief come alive. Your feeling supports and empowers your belief systems. It’s the feeling you engage when you evaluate things that gives conviction to your statements, and power behind your beliefs.

For instance, how about the thought of “you are smart”. Well if you compare yourself to other people who are on your level or a little below – if you compare yourself to Jim and Sally and Sandy and Pete, all those friends of yours – then you feel ok and probably see yourself as intelligent.

If you are thinking, “I study effectively, I do well at those things I undertake. I learn fairly quickly compared to others. I retain knowledge well, and tend to remember things probably as long, or longer, than most people do. I feel very comfortable when I’m studying new information. It doesn’t make me uneasy.” If these are your thoughts, all of these come together to support your belief that you’re smart.

But if you were to compare yourself in intelligence to Albert Einstein, Confucius, Margaret Thatcher, Linus Pauling and the gentleman who memorized word for word the entire King James Bible, you may not evaluate yourself quite so highly. You may not feel quite so smart.

Your beliefs about being smart are relative. Your beliefs about your health are potent and make an impact. You have amazing potential to be a great you. Believe in you, and your potential awaiting just below the surface.
