Emotional Connection

Helena Modjeska was a 19th century actress and was extremely popular because of her ability to communicate emotions powerfully. She could take her audience to tears or to laughter.

Once she gave a dramatic reading in Polish, which was her native language. The people she was speaking to here in the United States were all English speakers, none of them spoke Polish.

She gave a very passionate dramatic reading in Polish and received a standing ovation at the end. Many people were brought to tears by the power in her voice. What she had actually done was recite the Polish alphabet multiple times, with passion and with power, and it brought her audience to the standing ovation she received at the end.

Have you ever had somebody yawn when you’re talking to them? What does that feel like to you? Or have you ever had someone talking to you, like a teacher, and you fall asleep in class? Why? Most of the time it’s probably because of the lack of passion – they’re droning on and on and on. Well is that different than someone who laughs? Or somebody says something funny and it brings you to this place where you crack a smile and you feel better – absolutely.

What Elicits Others’ Passions?

We need to think about that which we’re doing and how it brings those emotions, that passion to the people around us personally and professionally. We need to find a way to make that happen for ourselves and for the people around us who depend on us.

If you know what you’re doing, if you love what you’re doing, if you believe in yourself, you believe in what you’re doing, you’ll be sold and it will make it easier to sell everyone around you.

When you have passion, that fire in your gut about your life, about your work, about the hobbies you have that you’re highly interested in, it’s contagious. People can see it in your eyes, they can hear it in your voice, they can feel some of that passion you have and it helps them buy in more to who you are, what you’re doing and those things you’re offering them.

It’s a Perception

When was the last time you stopped and asked yourself, why are the people who are my friends, around me?

Or, why do the people who work for me respect me and work for me with ease?

Or, why do the organizations and customers who come to us like us and do well for us and come back again and again?

It may seem like a simple question, but you need to take the time to mull this over. I can assure you it’s one of the most important things you’ll ever ponder in your life – why your relationships are what they are. Why the good ones are what they are and why the bad ones are what they are.
