Getting Real

And so today we’re going to take back some controls over the ‘stuff’ that fills our brains, fills our lives, helps keeps us focused or unfocused.

You sometimes maybe even ask yourself, “Well isn’t all this ‘stuff’ real?” Well, yes, it’s real. But at the same time it’s not, it’s your focus.

It’s the central things that you focus on most. Stuff wouldn’t really exist if you didn’t give it energy, if you didn’t give it focus, you didn’t give it power. That doesn’t mean that it’s not an actual thing but it holds sway over you because you choose to have it hold sway over you. You choose to make it important in your life. If it’s no longer important to you then it no longer controls you, it no longer has power over you.

The existence of your life is real, you don’t need to believe that life exists. You only have to look around you and see there really are living breathing creatures, there are trees, there is water, there is a place you can go and it’s called a home. You don’t have to have an opinion about that. As a matter of fact if you developed a belief or an opinion that there was no life alive in this universe, they would probably tend to lock you up somewhere or people would laugh at you a lot.

Focus Is It

But, your ‘stuff’ is just your primary focus. And some of it is real and some of it is just made up, it’s what you think reality is.

Having dealt with people who have paranoid delusions and schizophrenia, what they see, what they experience as absolutely real to them, they can see it, they can hear it, they can feel it and it is as real to them as is any person, anyone’s voice that you hear, anything you see, it is just that real.

But is it? The answer is no – it’s a creation of their mind. Can they have affect over that? And the answer is yes. You have to have your judgements. You have to have your opinions. You need to have your reality feel solid to you, because it is. Your reality is your creation – your job, your home, your work, the people in your lives – and it can change.

Beliefs About ‘Stuff’

So we need to think about in this process of ‘stuff’ and managing our ‘stuff’ as we go through life, what are our belief systems about it? A belief system is really a collection of opinions, feelings, values or thoughts about a person, a place, a thing, an activity that helps to design or define that person, place, thing or activity so that it can be dealt with.

Most people’s beliefs arise from what they trust, what they have been told is real, what they have experienced themselves as real and they then decide, “Ah, this is it.”

Beliefs help structure your experience in the world so that similarities are emphasized and unique differences get discounted a bit or set aside because we like things to be stable, including all of our ‘stuff’.

In fact, whenever it comes time for direct experience and if it contradicts what we believe to be real, we tend to discount it, we ignore it, we tend to consciously or unconsciously decide, “Nah, this is the exception, maybe it’s true but I can discount it and ignore it.”

The Belief Systems oftentimes tend to limit what we are willing to experience and believe we can experience in our life. Your personal and your professional life are limited by your beliefs.

You can never know everything. You can never fully understand all concepts in your career. You can only know your experience of it. Beliefs then shape your experience of your work, of your family, of your community within certain boundaries. The world you live in, the world you behave in tends to conform to what you believe it should be.
