The Law of Requisite Variety

Years ago when in college, I had to take the calculus series in math. I had a professor by the name of Fred Prydz who started out our program by teaching us how to do math in our mind, instead of on paper.

I had never been a good math student. Probably the best grade I’d ever gotten was a C. But he assisted my ability to do math so I aced the entire year series of calculus. How did he do that? He started off by teaching us the Law of Requisite Variety.

The Law of Requisite Variety says, “The part of the system with the most options will control the system.” Not might control the system, not could control the system, but WILL control the system.

Think about human systems. Let’s take for instance two people having an argument. Let’s say that the only thing one of the two people can do is scream, yell and jump up and down. That’s it, that’s the best they can do.

Whereas the other person can scream yell, jump up and down, or they can negotiate, they can walk away, they can laugh it off, they can call their best friend and bring them in to the argument, they can get an expert from outside who is an expert in this field. They can also go online and look up data. Or they can just stand and look at the person and not say a word.

If one person has all these various ways of dealing with this conflict and the other person could only scream and yell, who do you think would probably come out on top in the majority of the disagreements between them? Well obviously the person who had 6 or 7 different ways of managing the conflict would.

The Law of Requisite Variety — “The part of the system with the most options will control the system.” — is what we are talking about when we talk about “personal presence”.

Presence has to do with bringing together verbal and nonverbal skill sets that allow you to step up, allow you to present yourself in such a way that others will believe you, they accept you, and are willing to work with you.

The part of the system with the most options will control the system. You are going to be that part of the system. You’re are going to gain more options with this program today than you ever had before on how to create presence and influence while dealing with others.
