Garbage Truck

He continued, “This experience is ‘the principle of the garbage truck’. There are a huge number of people that are like an over-filled garbage truck, they’re trying to find a place to dump their garbage all the time.”

“They’re filled with pent-up frustration, anger, sadness, disappointment, fears–filled with garbage. They’re ready to spew this internal garbage at every opportunity.”

“What does a garbage truck do when it’s full? It dumps. These disenchanted people need a place to dump and it’s unlucky if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time because you don’t want to get caught up in their problems. Leave their problems with them, don’t take it personally, it doesn’t really have anything to do with you.”

He went on, “When they lash out at you in some way, just like that guy in the caddy did, if you become negative and emotional about what they did or said, you just turn yourself into a garbage dump. Some of their garbage is now in you and on you.”

He took a deep breath, stretched a bit and said “Just take a breath, smile, wave at them, be gracious and think to yourself, this is their problem, not mine, they can keep it. Then focus on the next thing you need to do – life is too short to get caught up in somebody else’s drama.”

An Ah-Ha Moment

For me, the bottom line of that brief experience with this amazing taxi driver was that it’s all a choice.

You can be reactive, you can be proactive and when garbage gets flung at you, you have a choice, be reactive and you’re in the garbage dump with them. Be proactive and you’re making a choice to run your own brain free from garbage. Smile, wave, breathe, and banish the negative self-talk that can drag you into the dumps. Make your day today a garbage free day.

We need to think about that because that philosopher taxi guy was right. We need to think about what we are giving away? What am I doing for the people around me? Am I getting caught up in dramas that really don’t benefit me or the people around me, or the people I’m serving or the people who depend on me? Stay free from their dramas. Apply these strategies to help you and them move forward.

We need to remember that what we give to other people can come back to us. You need to think about what are you doing right now that is helping you or helping that other person move forward into an ever better day, an ever better reality?

The most successful organizations are continually looking at how they can help their people get better. How they can make their customers happier? We need to think about what is being rewarded. What are we doing? Are we dumping garbage? Or are we choosing to be proactive and move beyond it?
