When President John Kennedy passionately stated, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country!” do you think there was any hesitation the way he delivered it? Did his words, tone of voice, facial expression, gestures, physical body posture all line up? Without a doubt.

The persona he presented was aligned on every level. He was passionate, he was congruent in words and actions when he made that statement and it grabbed the nation. It fired up people to support the government and bring about changes needed.

When Martin Luther King delivered his “I have a dream speech”, he stirred the hearts and minds of millions! His voice was passionate and unwavering. His facial expression and his gestures were strong and dynamic, he was aligned in mind and body with a powerful message, the message was so powerful that it inspired people worldwide and has now for generations.

To achieve success you have to be all systems go on doing what needs to be done. Think about the word “try”. When someone says, “I’ll try and get that done,” there’s incongruence. Part of them wants to do it, another part doesn’t. Or they partially think they can, but they also think they might not be able to—so instead of a straight out Yes or No, they waffle and say “try”. If you had no hesitation or misalignment your statement would be, “I’ll do it”, not “I’ll try.”

No Trying

The way a professor demonstrated this to his class was, he said, “Pick up your pen, now try and drop it.” The majority of the people dropped the pen, a few didn’t.

He then said, “I didn’t say drop the pen, I said “try” and drop the pen. See you can’t try and drop it. You’re either dropping it, or you are holding it. You can’t try and drop it unless someone has Epoxy glued the pen to your hand and you are working at shaking it off. Even then you aren’t really trying you are doing, just not very well.”

I remember years ago hearing a lecture by Glen Turner. He said, “Trying is lying! You have to do it!”

John Gardner said, “Life is the art of drawing without an eraser.” He also said, “We are continually faced with the series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as insolvable problems.”.

Isaac Newton said, “Men build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

The ability to pace another person, the ability to interact in a way that works for you and for them, to make that connection, to communicate deeply and effectively builds a bridge between you and other people. Make this your focus every day.

Communicate better. Make yourself in sync with others. Learn to give and get those things that make communication and relationships work for both of you.

You can be, you can do, you can achieve whatever you desire; no one can stop you. Attend to those things that you can take care of, those things you can make an impact on, because today is a new day.

You can do more than you’ve ever done before. Building great relationships begins with this moment. By paying better attention, by communicating more effectively, by truly finessing how you communicate, you can build a much more effective and satisfying life.
