When you’re adding new skills in your life, the more you love what you do, the more you will gain. The more you’re excited, the easier it will be for you to get going and to follow through. The skill of making passion well up inside you on command is just that – a learned skillset. There are very few who actually do it with ease but anyone can learn how.

Often, that motivation, that power and fire inside of you will determine whether you’ll succeed or fail. Success is not necessarily because you’re the most skillful but because you have a compendium of knowledge about how to apply those specific skillsets.

Motivation + Skill = An Unstoppable Force

Are you motivated to go golfing or to take a vacation? Maybe. But if you like to do one or both of those things you really don’t have to struggle too hard to get fired up to go out there and do it.

It’s not like you have to give yourself a pep talk – “Well, I know I can do this vacation. I’ll just make myself take it whether I really need it or not, or whether I want it now or not. I will get out there and give it the good old college try. I’ll make myself take a vacation and force myself to have a good time.”

Probably not—no I don’t think so. That’s not the way it works.

Motivation applies most often to get ourselves up and running on tasks we aren’t all that excited about. It pertains to us getting ourselves going on things we need to do, ought to do, should do, have to do, but don’t really feel like or want to do.

Steve Andreas and Motivation
