Overcoming Your “Inner Enemies”

You aren’t born a good person, nor are you born a bad one. You don’t come into the world having courage, and you aren’t born with fear. There are experiences you’ll have that grow your courage, and others that make you feel small and weak. To conquer the first of your mental enemies–fear–you must step-up into courage.

Having courage is a prerequisite for overcoming the barriers and fears that block your ability to achieve the life you want. Fear of taking action can ruin your relationships. Fears can crush your ambition. Fear can stop you from going for your goals, and destroy you financially. Fear is one of the most harmful inner enemies. When it arises, pay attention to the message it’s trying to give you, then make a decision and move on. Cut it loose.

A second inner enemy that must be eradicated is self directed anger. Many say, “I get mad at myself because of my bad habit of _______.” If the anger helped you stop doing ______ then that’s fine. The problem is, self anger that’s not resolved turns into guilt, which can tear you apart. If left unchecked, it can destroy your self esteem and turn you into a door mat. Don’t get angry–get proactive! Make the change your self anger and guilt are prodding you to do!

A third inner enemy is indecisiveness. When it’s time to make a decision–step up. One of the fastest ways to destroy your credibility with others is if they know you have a decision to make, you have the information, and you hesitate, stall, are wishy-washy and don’t make the decision. Teddy Roosevelt said, “More is lost by indecision than by wrong decision.” Overcome this inner enemy to your personal and professional success.

A fourth mental enemy is the worry habit. Worry is a negative, circular thinking pattern. It’s a skillset you developed–though not one of the better ones. You do need to pay attention to problems. You do need to be concerned–concern is healthy. Worry is painful over concern. It’s gone too far, and tangles up your brain. In many cases, it causes actions to stall. When your worries are bullying you–bully them back. Get in the face of that worry and stop riding round and round in the negative whirlpool of thought.

A fifth enemy within is being risk adverse. All of life is a risk. Every moment of every day you are moving into an uncertain future. You need to take risks to get what you want. I’m not talking about taking foolish or deadly risks. But you have to be willing to experiment. Take a chance and do something new or unique. It makes you feel good about yourself and you are learning. Go for it–do something new that stretches your comfort zone a bit.

You just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other, and blast these enemies when they try to stop you.
