Another thing you must do to have more harmony, more peace within your world is to challenge your shoulds. Quit shoulding on yourself – “I should do this, I must do that, I ought to have _____”fill in the blank. The shoulds, the musts, the ought-tos the have-tos get in your way. They lead to self-induced pressure that diminishes your ability to have a calmer mind and better focus. Look at what you can do and what you can’t do.

Shoulds are used by parents with young children to help them learn. Unfortunately, a “should” is a guilt producer in many cases. We need to replace should with could or will or I’m going to. Stop the indecisiveness of shoulding on yourself, instead decide what you will do and what you will not do and do that. Should implies I’m not really going to but I’m thinking I have to. Acknowledge what you will do and set the other stuff aside temporarily so that you can take better care of yourself.

You also need to monitor your thoughts. Your thoughts can make or break the quality of your life. Louis L ’Amour said, “Up to a point a person’s life is shaped by an environment, heredity, movements and changes in the world about them. Then there comes a time when it lies within their grasp to shape the clay of their life into the sort of thing they wish it to be.” Everyone has within them the power to say, “This is who I am today and that shall I be tomorrow.”

We need to monitor our thoughts. We need to manage what’s going on around us. Our thoughts can make or break our quality of life. Be certain to choose thinking that works for you, talk to yourself as you would a best friend.

Self-loathing serves no purpose and undoubtedly will take away from your life. You need to monitor your thinking patterns and your self-talk. Negative self-talk is a creator of guilt, shame, fear, worry, anxiety, anger. You need to manage your self-talk and monitor your thinking patterns so you can break free of them and eliminate the negative pattern which often rumbles around inside of your brain. By doing that, by monitoring your thinking patterns, you become stronger, you become much more powerful.
