How Can You Take Advantage Of Your Full Potential?

Part 4 of 11 from Mission Success

(continued from last week…)

Lighten the Pack You Carry

Henry David Thoreau said, “Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.”

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale said, “Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it for that often determines our success or failure.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, “The talent of success is nothing more than doing what you can do well, and doing well wherever you can do and are doing.”

Have you ever tried to run while you are carrying a really heavy pack or you are carrying a lot of weight? You can do it, but it’s tough. You can even do it sometimes for extended periods of time but it wears you out faster.

One of the things we need to do to build a better future is to sometimes release some of those weights that we are carrying around with us about what our past has been or what we think the future might be. We need to let go of some of that baggage we are carrying around so to speak. An Olympic runner can certainly run long distance carrying more weight than you yet at the same time, that’s not really the goal.

Do you think they will win a medal if they are carrying an extra fifty pounds while they are running their marathon or their long distance race? Probably not. They can run and they can still do well, probably outrun you or me yet at the same time, they will be highly limited. We have to take off some of that weight that we are carrying around. You only use a fraction of your potential. There are so many things you have never even touched or tapped into that you can do. Yet it’s all an exploration, the future is uncertain, it’s all about change.

You’ve heard that before right? You have unlimited potential. Potential is really a combination of three things. The first aspect is your genetic or physical component–it’s the way you look, it’s how your body grows up, it’s the immune system you have and your general health.

A second part of this potential is what you know; it’s about what you’ve learned, it’s the information, the data, the skills that you’ve acquired as you’ve grown up to this point in your life. What you’ve learned about yourself and what you’ve learned about the world up to this point is only a small portion of information available to you. No one in the world ever had or will have exactly the same accumulation of knowledge and potential as you do because you are unique. This includes skills you developed about how to do what you do.

The third aspect of your potential is about your attitude and thinking processes. It’s about motivation, it’s about drive, it’s about using your brain to pick yourself up and get yourself moving. This attitudinal piece includes the urge to grow, to achieve to excel to become more. Much of this is a learned skill and a choice of mental focus. It is picking your future goals, it’s building your desire of where you want to go and then boosting yourself into action. It’s feeling enthusiasm, it’s that desire, and it’s actualizing your potential. Sometimes external factors can motivate us and trigger fear, anxiety, excitement, happiness, etc. But motivation really occurs inside because whatever happens outside of you it’s just “stuff”.
