Analyze, Decide, Act

In 1939, there was a paper published at the Mayo clinic by Dr. W.C. Alverez. He said ulcers usually flare up or subside according to the hills and valleys of emotional stress.

He made that statement backed up by a study of 15,000 patients he had treated for stomach disorders at the Mayo clinic.

He found that 4 out of 5 patients had no physical basis whatsoever for their stomach illnesses. Fear, worry, hate, selfishness, the inability to adjust to changes in the world, he said are largely the causes of these patients stomach illnesses and ulcers. He also said that stomach ulcers can kill you if you don’t take back control.

The Brain & Body Connection

One of Dr. Alverez’s associates at the Mayo clinic was Dr. Harold Habien. He presented a paper at the American Association for Industrial Physicians and Surgeons. Dr Habien had done a survey of business executives across the US. He found that more than one third of these executives suffered from one of three different ailments, peculiar to high tension living. These three are heart disease, digestive tract ulcers, and high blood pressure.

That was back in the 1930’s. It’s even more prevalent today. Some of the effects of this negative self-talk and tension focused thinking are stress, worry, anxiety, panic disorders and many physical ailments which are prevalent in our society today.

Almost all panic disorders are created by negative thinking patterns. Anger, cynicism, criticism of oneself and others, communication break downs, feeling overwhelmed, pressure, tension, feeling you can’t quite get it all done. Fear, guilt, depression, these are also results of that negative thinking, that pressure feeling. Having a lack of motivation, low productivity, and procrastination are all the result of worry type thinking, clouded thinking.

Research documents that you learn slower the more tense you are. Yet often when it comes time for students to study or prepare for an exam, what do they do? They stress themselves out about the papers they have to write, the tests they have to take, where they have to get to. It lowers vitality and sets us up for physical illnesses. We need to manage our brains so that our physiology goes along with it.

Get It Going

Aristotle said thinking is a very simple process. All we need to do is find a situation we want to analyze, get the facts, and analyze the facts. Arrive at a decision about that and then take action on that decision. This again is very similar to what Dr. James postulated. Aristotle said, decide what we will analyze number one, get the facts number two, analyze the facts number three, arrive at a decision number four, and number five, act on that decision.

Seems obvious doesn’t it? And you’ve done this over and over in your life, yet when things get tough we forget. We get caught up in the drama and forget to do these simple things to move our lives forward. We can each use these to solve problems of business, personal, and family life.

Let’s look at the first component here. After we decide what to analyze, it’s getting the facts. Why is it so important to get the facts? Because the actual real facts and the facts as they are thought of in a persons mind or as someone else may choose to portray them, may be very, very different.

Unless we analyze the actual real facts, we can’t possibly even make an effective attempt to solve our problems. Without the true facts, all we can do is stew around in confusion.

Aristotle said worry is caused by people trying to make decisions before they have sufficient knowledge on which to base their decisions.

If I have a problem that has to be faced today at 3 o clock, I may think about it now and make a decision about it now, but I first have to make certain that I’ve all the facts before I try and make that decision. Concentrate first on getting the facts that bear on coming up with a n answer to the issue.

Don’t worry about it. Don’t antagonize over it, don’t lose sleep, and don’t let it stop getting other things done. Just focus on the facts and when the time gets here, take that information and make your decision.

Aristotle further said, if you devote the time to getting the facts in an impartial objective way, your worries will usually evaporate in the light of that knowledge.

But instead what do many people do? We don’t bother with the facts at all. We just jump to conclusions. That thing you are observing could mean _________, so I’ll run with that.
