How To Be Kind To Yourself

Part 5 of 10 from The Heart of Winning!

(continued from last week…)

If you only take care of one thing you will run out of gas. Let’s say you lift weights only with one arm, you don’t do your legs, you don’t do your torso, you don’t do the other arm, you only lift weights with arm, and you lift a lot of weight often. You may have a very powerful arm and I suppose that could suit you and serve you in some situations, but you would be out of balance. Your body will respond negatively to that ultimately. You need to have muscle in all parts of your body not just in one arm.

This is the same in your education, in your evolution, spiritual growth as a human, in your physical body, in your family situation, in your career and finances. You need to be lifting weights in each area, that way you can have rounded winning.

Winning really begins with your relationship with yourself inside of you. As you look at what’s going on with you, how much do you like you? Are you okay? Do you think you are a relatively good person? Do you have integrity? Do you do things that benefit you, your family, and the people you care about, the community you live in? Do you have value and do you value yourself? Or do you put you down and pick on you? Your ability to get along with other people is an indicator of how you feel about you.

If you think about those people who have low esteem, who don’t feel good about themselves, do they normally have a giant social circle with lots of people who love and care for them? Probably not. If you don’t care about you and you don’t take good care of you and you don’t feel value for you how can somebody else have that? You have to be kind to yourself; you have to be a good friend to you and be comfortable with who you are.

The more you respect you, the higher standards you have, the greater your integrity, the more you get out there and actively go for it, the more you will like you, the more fun you will have, and the better friend and companion you can be to all those people you encounter.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Watch your thoughts they become words, watch your words they become actions, watch your actions they become habits. Watch your habits they become character. Watch your character for it becomes your destiny”. You have choices, you need to think about your character, your desire, who you are, where you are growing, those things you want to achieve in your life, because those choices, those thinking patterns turn into your character and move you to be or do more or less effective things.

One of the keys to having a winning attitude and a winning potential is integrity. Integrity has often been described as doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Isn’t that the truth? Even if no one’s looking, you are, and if you lie to yourself, if you break a commitment you made even if no one except you knows it, there is a part of your mind that will slap you a little bit because of it.

When you try and hide your behavior, no matter whether someone else knows or not, you will know and you can feel it in your gut. There’s a part of us that when we have this integrity allows us to be more and then we can care more for ourselves and the people around us.

Part of integrity is being accountable; whoever makes the decision to do something carries the power, carries the buck so to speak. You have to be accountable for what you do. Integrity means that no matter what, I stand up for those things I have done, those things that are part of my team, that which I myself am involved in.

When accountable people make a decision, they follow through. I once heard accountability described as having proprietary interest in whatever you are doing. If you think back to the days of the old west, the proprietor of the general store was usually the owner of the store. He had a very high level of accountability and a stake in doing what’s right. He had integrity to his customers, to his prices, to the people who were his suppliers. And that proprietary interest he had in doing his work, his store, his job, made a difference to the people who came to him.

Have integrity and accountability and a high level of proprietary interest in what you do. It makes a difference for everyone around you and builds that winning attitude and that attitude can make such a difference.
