Einstein’s Attitude Adjusters

Albert Einstein is most well-known for his theory of relativity. Yet toward the end of his life, he wrote on spirituality, on attitudes, on the human condition, on becoming happier and being a more effective human being. He wrote about many subjects, all having to do with thinking, attitude and managing oneself.

Einstein wrote on cultivating a mental attitude that will bring you more calmness, more happiness, and a better life overall. He said he had done this most of his life, even during the time he had to flee Nazi Germany.

Actions Assist Attitudes

A great philosopher, who was also a ruler of the Roman Empire, Marcus Aurelius, said there are eight words that will determine your destiny:

“Our life is what our thoughts make it.”

If you focus on positive good things going on in your life, you will feel positive and good.

If you focus on scary, shameful, negative thoughts, you will feel lousy.

If you focus on illness thoughts you will feel sick.

If you focus on potential, positive, and what you can achieve, you will be more motivated and feel better.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said,

“A man is what he thinks about all day long.”

Norman Vincent Peale said,

“You are not what you think you are. But what you think–you are!”

The most vital lesson you can learn is the importance of managing your self-talk, watching what is going on in your mind.

Be absolutely clear about the self-talk that is running through your brain, what you are choosing to focus on, and the direction your thoughts are propelling your actions (or inactions.)

Be Clear At The Start

In many cases, everything that is in agreement with what we want and our desires seems true, seems great, doesn’t it? Quite often though, if it disagrees with us, we tend to get distressed or stressed and try to figure out a way around it even if we know that’s probably something we need to pay attention to.

Is it any wonder it’s often times so hard to get at the answers to our problems? You could have the same trouble trying to solve a second grade arithmetic problem if you went on the assumption that 2+2=5. It does not. The fact is 2+2=4. Yet there are a lot of people who make trouble for themselves by insisting that 2+2=5.

We know that we’ve to first find the facts before we can do what we need to do. When you are overly emotionally charged, worried, anxious, panicked, tense, or overwhelmed, emotions take root and grow and cause distortion about what is real.

Analyze, Decide, Act

In 1939, there was a paper published at the Mayo clinic by Dr. W.C. Alverez. He said ulcers usually flare up or subside according to the hills and valleys of emotional stress.

He made that statement backed up by a study of 15,000 patients he had treated for stomach disorders at the Mayo clinic.

He found that 4 out of 5 patients had no physical basis whatsoever for their stomach illnesses. Fear, worry, hate, selfishness, the inability to adjust to changes in the world, he said are largely the causes of these patients stomach illnesses and ulcers. He also said that stomach ulcers can kill you if you don’t take back control.

Moving On From This

Psychologically, when you accept that and say, okay that is the worst that can happen, can I deal with it? Yes I can deal with it, and I will move on. When you do that, you release your mental and your physical energy. When you have accepted the worst, when you have nothing more to lose that means you now have a whole bunch to can gain. The worst is over, good things are to come.

When you are at the bottom of the barrel, the only way is up–right? You immediately relax. This acceptance gives you peace. You can move forward, you can make it a better day.

It makes sense doesn’t it? Think about it. Have there ever been people who made it through terrible times and bounced back because they refuse to accept that the worst is where they are going to stay? They refuse to not improve on what’s happened. They refuse to not salvage themselves for the wreck that has occurred.

Accept and Move On

For years on the wall of my office, I’ve had a plaque with the saying called Salutation to the Dawn, it came from Sanskrit. It applies to this living in day focused timeframes.

The Salutation to the Dawn says,

“Look to this day, for it is life, the very life of life.

In its brief course lie all the varieties and realities of your existence.

The bliss of growth, the glory of action, the splendor of beauty.

For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision.

Yet every today well lived makes yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Look well therefore to this day, such is the salutation to the dawn.”

Acceptance of What Is

Dr. William James, one of the fathers of modern psychology, used to tell his students, “Be willing to have it so, because acceptance of what has happened is the first step of overcoming any misfortune.”

Day Focused Timeframes

42 years later he was addressing the students at Yale University. Dr. Osler said that a person like himself who had been a professor at four universities, who had written a number of books, some of which were popular, that many people said to him that you must have brains of a special quality. He replied that was absolutely untrue.

He said that if you talked to many of his closest friends, you would find that in many ways he was very mediocre in character and definitely no smarter than anyone else.

It’s Time For Action

Do you ever wonder just what needs to be done to take your life to the next level?

Are there habits you have that maybe aren’t the best, or that get in your way at times?

Have you ever said to yourself, ‘There must be a way for me to be able to do __________?’ But you just let it slip away. You never took action, never got yourself going, you thought about it a lot but just never quite got there.
